About the Organization
Chevron is one of the world's largest energy companies and, through its Bangladesh operations, the single most significant foreign player in the country's energy sector. Chevron is one of the world's leading integrated energy companies, involved in virtually every facet of the energy industry. In Bangladesh, it operates through local subsidiaries, Chevron Bangladesh Block Twelve, Ltd. and Chevron Bangladesh Blocks Thirteen & Fourteen, Ltd., running three gas fields in the northeast of the country.
The scale of its contribution to the national economy is substantial. Chevron Bangladesh is the largest producer of natural gas in the country, accounting for over 60% of total domestic natural gas production, and its facilities also produce over 80% of domestic condensate production. Beyond production, Chevron's subsidiary in Bangladesh is not only the country's largest natural gas producer, supplying a large share of national gas consumption from its three gas fields in the northeast, but is also the country's largest foreign investor. A defining feature of its operation is its local character: Chevron Bangladesh has achieved a remarkable safety record, managing its operations with a workforce that comprises over 95% Bangladeshi nationals. Underpinning how the company works is a shared value system; at Chevron Bangladesh, this common set of values is referred to as "The Chevron Way," the foundation for what the company believes and how it behaves.
Business Operations
Chevron's core business in Bangladesh is the production of natural gas and condensate from three onshore fields. The three gas fields, Bibiyana, Jalalabad, and Moulavi Bazar, are operated under Production Sharing Contracts with the Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh, represented by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and with Petrobangla. All of this output is sold to the national energy authorities, with the gas helping to power Bangladesh's economy. The flagship of these is Bibiyana: Chevron operates the Bibiyana Gas Field in Block 12, situated in Nabiganj of Habiganj district, the largest operating gas field in Bangladesh, with first production having started in March 2007.
The company emphasizes technology and operational excellence in how it runs these assets. It strives to demonstrate its commitment to safety and operational excellence, with innovative technology playing a key role in delivering affordable, reliable energy, deploying technologies that are cost-effective while helping recover additional resources from existing fields.
Corporate social responsibility is woven into its operating model rather than treated as an add-on. CSR is a core value of Chevron's global business practice, and in Bangladesh Chevron has been sponsoring social investment programs since 2006. These programmes are tied closely to the communities around its fields: Chevron has helped farming families who live near its gas fields sustainably diversify and grow their incomes, supported local youth by providing technical trades training, and supported economic development, education, and health care activities and programmes.
