About the Organization
City Bank PLC is one of the oldest private commercial banks in Bangladesh. It began its journey on 27 March 1983, opening its first branch at B. B. Avenue in Dhaka, founded by around 13 local businessmen who took on considerable risk to establish the bank. What started with a modest capital base has since grown into one of the country's most prominent financial institutions. The company was formerly known as The City Bank Limited and changed its name to City Bank PLC in December 2023.
Today the bank is headquartered at City Bank Center, 28 Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan 1, Dhaka. It is a publicly listed company, traded on the Dhaka Stock Exchange under the ticker CITYBANK, and is led by Aziz Al Kaiser as Chairman and Mashrur Arefin as Managing Director and CEO. As of 2025 the bank operates around 164 locations across Bangladesh. One of its defining distinctions is that City Bank is the sole licensee of American Express cards in Bangladesh, and is also a licensee for Visa and MasterCard debit and credit cards.
Business Operations
City Bank operates as a full-service, real-time online bank serving both individual and corporate customers. It provides products and services across retail banking, corporate finance, SME finance, digital banking, asset management, equity brokerage, and securities, and runs a full-fledged Islamic banking operation.
On the retail side, the bank offers a wide range of savings and current accounts, fixed deposit accounts, and loans including auto, personal, home, and student loans. Its wholesale and corporate arm covers working capital finance, trade finance, project finance, structured finance, supply chain finance, cash management, and investment banking. Beyond core banking, City Bank has built out a number of specialised offerings, including City Alo women's banking, card services, offshore and Islamic banking, bancassurance, digital banking, and dedicated SME, agent, and financial literacy banking services.
A notable feature of its operating model is its structure: City Bank is among the few local banks that moved away from the traditional, decentralised, geographically managed, branch-based profit model, instead adopting a centralised, customer-segment-based business and operating model supported by a robust operations setup and IT backbone. This allows the bank to deliver specialised treatment to its different customer segments.
Affiliation with BUP Career Club
City Bank has become one of the most significant corporate partners of the BUP Career Club, deepening its association with the club's flagship annual event over consecutive editions.
For the eighth edition, City Bank came on board as the Banking Partner of the East Coast Group presents BUP Career and Education Fest 2025, powered by Mentors' Study Abroad, held from 23 to 25 June 2025 on the BUP campus, an event that brought together over 35 reputed organisations to connect directly with students for jobs, internships, and CV submissions.
The relationship was elevated significantly in the following edition, with the bank stepping up from a supporting partner to the lead sponsor. BUP Career Club is hosting the ninth edition of its flagship event, City Bank Presents BUP Career & Education Fest 2026, powered by Trust Bank PLC and co-powered by Bangladesh Machine Tools Factory (BMTF), from 17 to 21 May 2026 at Bangladesh University of Professionals. The "presents" billing marks City Bank as the title sponsor of the event.
This affiliation reflects a strong alignment of purpose. The BUP Career Club exists to create a bridge between the corporate world and the university, helping fresh graduates access their desired professions while equipping students with the skills to stay ahead of the competition. By backing the club's signature recruitment and education festival, City Bank positions itself directly within Bangladesh's emerging professional talent pipeline, giving the bank visibility among graduates entering the finance and corporate sectors while supporting the club's mission of career readiness and employability.
